Small and medium-sized enterprises will spend over 94m [pounds sterling] on Christmas cards, stamps and working time wasted signing them, according to Envirowise. The cost is on top of the environmental damage of printing 20,000 tonnes of card, some of which will end up in landfill.

The sustainable business organisation is urging companies to switch to sending e-cards. About 150 million cards and presents are delivered by Royal Mail each day during the Christmas period. But over 130,000 e-cards have been sent free since 2005 via the Envirowise web site. Users can choose from 13 designs that can be branded with corporate logos and personalised with individual messages.
