Degrees of disagreement.

I couldn't disagree more with P A Talbot's views about accounting A-levels (Letters, July/August).

Subjects such as accounting, journalism and tourism may be sound, but are best learned on the job. If students are interested in careers in accounting--a noble choice, I'm sure we'd all agree--I would recommend that they take A-levels and a degree in a subject they enjoy and excel at, rather than limit their career options at an early age.

As an employer, I much prefer a candidate who has good qualifications in the traditional "stem" subjects such as maths, English and the sciences. These have stood the test of time for good reasons and tell me that the holder is well suited for the rigours of professional study.

I don't have the expertise to challenge P A Talbot's assessment of the intellectual rigour of an A-level in accounting, but we must be careful not to exaggerate the importance of the qualifications mentioned.
