When pensions are in the news, it is rarely a good thing. Whether it's Maxwell falling off the side of a boat and the subsequent revelation that he had squandered his employees' pension funds, or Equitable Life losing a court battle and finding itself unable to meet its liabilities, pension news stories tend to be negative.

It isn't really that surprising -- a headline such as "Pensioner finds he has enough to live on" is hardly going to sell newspapers. Pensions are not, as a rule, terribly exciting -- and the fact that we can't touch any of our pension savings until we reach 60 or 65 makes the whole subject even less immediate.

But at a time when people are living longer and retiring earlier, pensions are one of the most important areas of financial planning. All too often people leave it too late to start saving for their retirement and find themselves having to adapt to reduced means when they would like to be pushing the boat out.
