Informal social networks are the key to successful collaboration, according to recent research by CIMA, while formal controls can impede good working relationships and stifle creativity.

The report, titled "Collaboration and Control: Managing Tensions in Competitive Inter-Organisational Relationships", studied five UK independent publishing houses that collaborate on a range of activities, such as printing and warehousing, despite being competitors.
