From sending 6,500 restaurant staff for a day of celebration in Johannesburg to booking an 83-year-old tourist on a trip into space, stories by speakers at CIMA's world conference in Malaysia showed that the recession hasn't stopped firms from thinking big.

Robert Brozin, CEO of Nando's restaurants, South Africa, explained how the company had profited from closing every branch in the country on its 20th birthday and sending staff to a party. Despite losing that day's trade, sales exceeded budget at the end of the month, employees were motivated and the brand was enhanced--some customers even wrote to praise the firm for taking care of its people.
