From new members' celebrations and CPD to cricket in Toronto--it's time to get involved.

I would like to reflect briefly on the recent horrific events in London, which have been a terrible shock to all of us. While our thoughts remain with the victims and their families and friends, I believe it's important that we don't allow such events to affect our way of life. This type of fortitude has been demonstrated superbly by our members worldwide over the past few years and particularly in recent times by those working in, or travelling to, our Chapter Street headquarters.

We were determined to continue with our new members' celebration in the heart of the City on July 11 at the Lloyd's building in London. We were also delighted that the 300 people involved in the celebrations shared our view and contributed to the success of the evening. It was an opportunity for us to offer our warmest congratulations to some of our newly qualified management accountants.

There is, of course, a key similarity between the business of Lloyd's and that of CIMA: the focus on risk management. To undertake this pivotal task well, we need to use all the knowledge and techniques gained in our training. Above all, we need the breadth of intellect to take on the challenges facing our businesses in both the private and public sectors--to understand, help drive and add value to them.

Clearly, the market needs people who can think creatively and analytically, who are good with numbers and who are imaginative. I believe that these qualities and abilities sum up the chartered management accountant. But we also have a responsibility to keep our knowledge and skills up to date. Continuing professional development (CPD) is vitally important in a rapidly changing business landscape.
