On 14 December 2000, the UNCHR launched an initiative to assist refugee artists from various countries to perform at a spectacular show in Geneva for the 50th anniversary of the UNCHR. The initiative has so far produced two albums. Building Bridges is the second Refugee Voices production, released on 20 June 2001 to mark the first ever World Refugee Day.

The CD was produced in Senegal for the UNCHR under the artistic direction of the evergreen Youssou N'dour, at his own studio in Dakar. It enabled refugee musicians from nine African countries living as far apart as Sengal, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Canada and Britain to come together and perform for free. Proceeds from the sale of the album will go towards refugee education, to help young refugees build a better future.
