Brazil's blowers get most backing.

Brazilian businesses are the best in the world at supporting whistle-blowers, according to a survey of 33 nations by Grant Thornton, while UK firms rank only 16th.

Only 40 per cent of British firms have measures to accommodate potential whistleblowers, compared with 85 per cent in Brazil. The Philippines and Armenia also provide better support than the UK.

The findings are surprising given that HM Treasury recently announced plans to extend the powers of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to safeguard whistle-blowers. This resulted partly from the drop in HBOS's share price in March after a London-based hedge fund circulated false rumours.
