More than $400m worth of 'blood diamonds' are flowing from Angola on to world markets each year despite United Nations sanctions on the guns-for-gems diamond trade imposed three years ago. A UN Security Council report says "the structures for selling illicit diamonds remain in place. It appears that the Belgian and South African markets are two key points of sale or transit for embargoed diamonds, Israel being used as a laundering route for some imports."
