Bitdefender releases crypto-vaccine for most prolific ransomware families.

Bitdefender have recently released a free tool to defeat the three most prevalent ransomware families, CTB-Locker, Locky and TeslaCrypt. This launch follows Bitdefender's prediction that ransomware is set to be one of the largest security issues to face UK businesses and consumers in 2016.

The ransomware-vaccine software is based on the same principles as a previous tool Bitdefender released to combat and prevent CryptoWall infections. When a ransomware strain infects a computer, it plants what is called a 'flag' to mark that the respective computer had already been infected. When the ransomware attempts to execute and detects the presence of the flag, it exits the decryption procedure and leaves the files intact The anti-ransomware tool computes and sets these flags to generate what is known as 'an immune response'.
