Africa may soon have a United Nations-style Security Council with the power to intervene militarily in continental conflict zones, if recommendations by a 15-member committee of African ambassadors are accepted by the Organisation of African Unity.

The ambassadors, charged with implementing the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad), will report on their deliberations when the OAU meets in South Africa in July and is transformed into the African Union.
