A mortality study, conducted by the US-based International Rescue Committee, has estimated that nearly 3 million people have died since the outbreak of civil war in Congo 32 months ago.

"Between August 1998 and April 2001, approximately 2.5 million deaths have occurred because of this conflict," the NGO said in a report released in early May. "Using a set of assumptions, we estimate that 3.5 million deaths have occurred among the 19.9 million residents of Eastern DRC, 2.5 million more than expected during this period."
